Sapphire Meniscus Lens
Positive and negative sapphire meniscus lenses for beam shaping, focusing, collimation and demanding optical applications.
Microwork manufactures custom sapphire meniscus lenses for optical systems where curved-surface geometry, optical stability, mechanical durability and environmental resistance are required.
A meniscus lens has one convex surface and one concave surface. Depending on the design, it can be used to reduce spherical aberration, improve beam control, assist focusing or collimation, and support compact optical layouts where a simple plano-convex or plano-concave lens may not provide the desired optical performance.
Sapphire meniscus lenses are often considered for laser systems, imaging systems, medical optics, sensor optics, UV / visible / IR optical systems and harsh-environment optical assemblies where the lens must resist scratching, chemical exposure, high temperature, pressure or vacuum conditions.

Positive and Negative Meniscus Lens Design
A positive meniscus lens is commonly used when the optical system requires positive optical power with improved control of spherical aberration compared with some simpler lens shapes.
A negative meniscus lens can be used when negative optical power, beam expansion, aberration balancing or optical path correction is required.
For sapphire meniscus lenses, both curved surfaces must be reviewed carefully. Radius values, center thickness, edge thickness, centration and surface quality directly affect optical performance and manufacturability.
Meniscus Lens vs Plano-Convex Lens
A plano-convex sapphire lens has one flat surface and one convex surface, making it suitable for many focusing and collimation applications.
A meniscus sapphire lens has two curved surfaces and is often selected when the optical design requires better aberration control, beam shaping or a more compact optical path.
Because meniscus lenses require two controlled curved surfaces, they are usually more complex to manufacture than simple plano-convex lenses. Radius tolerance, centration, surface accuracy and coating requirements should be reviewed carefully before quotation.
Coating Options
Sapphire meniscus lenses can be supplied with coating options depending on wavelength, transmission requirement and operating environment.
Available coating options may include:
• Anti-reflective coating
• UV, visible or IR wavelength-specific coating
• Dielectric coating
• Partial reflector coating
• Custom coating design based on optical requirement
Coating performance should be reviewed together with wavelength range, angle of incidence, surface quality, operating temperature and environmental exposure.
Engineering Considerations
When designing a sapphire meniscus lens, engineers should consider R1 and R2 radius values, focal length, center thickness, edge thickness, surface quality, centration, clear aperture, coating durability, mounting method and operating environment.
Meniscus lenses are more sensitive to curvature control and centration than simple flat windows or basic plano lenses. Small diameter, steep curvature, thin edges, tight centration, high surface quality and special coating requirements can significantly affect manufacturability, lead time and cost.
Mounting stress should also be considered. Excessive clamping force, uneven support or poor edge design may cause chipping, cracking or optical alignment issues.
